Advancing a sustainable pet food industry
Many factors play a major role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pet food industry.
These include sustainable raw materials, environmentally friendly production and recyclable packaging materials, and we are very mindful of the role our industry plays in the responsible use of resources in pet food production, including minimising, wherever possible, its environmental impact.
Sustainable ingredients
The biggest impact on sustainability across the food sector in the UK comes from producing the actual ingredients. Whilst most people only think about food production and consumption from a human perspective, pet food accounts for a sizeable proportion of food system emissions, land use, and water consumption.
Through our membership, we have a dedicated sustainability committee that work together to drive action to mitigate the impacts of the ingredients we use. It enables pet food companies of all sizes to make informed decisions on sourcing ingredients in the most sustainable way.
Sustainable manufacturing
We also strive to be at the forefront of technology, using the latest production innovations wherever possible to minimise resource depletion while maximising safety standards.
Packaging is critical to ensuring that pet food is kept safe and fresh, as well as providing important factual and legal information about the product inside. However, there is widespread concern about the impact of products on the environment and we work with our members to provide the latest news and technological advances, as well as supporting initiatives to reduce the negative impacts of pet food packaging.
