UK Pet Food comment on the UK approval of using cultivated meat in pet food.
At UK Pet Food we welcomed Meatly, a producer of cultivated meat, as a member (supplier to the pet food industry) earlier this year. The introduction of cultivated meat is an exciting development for the pet food industry. As the demand for dietary proteins continues to grow, along with the increasing pressure on environmental resources, innovative products such as cultivated meat, insect and other novel proteins are timely and welcomed.
Sarah Hormozi, Head of Science and Education at UK Pet Food added: “We encourage further research and development to ensure novel proteins are fit for purpose, nutritionally appropriate and safe for the species they are intended for before making them more cost effective and accessible. We believe Meatly will be a great addition to our diverse range of member companies who are committed to provide safe, nutritious pet food choices for all pets.”
We predict some small quantities of pet food, made with cultivated meat, to be available on the market later this year with the possibility of increased production in the near future.
