Choosing the right Fish
If you're new to the world of fish and want to introduce a pet fish to your home, the first decision you need to make is what type of fish you want to keep.
Fish can be broken down into three categories, each suitable for different types of owners and your understanding of fish.
1. Coldwater fish
Coldwater Fish consist mainly of Goldfish species.
They tend to be the hardiest fish, which makes them ideal for beginners.
2. Tropical freshwater fish
Tropical freshwater fish are the most diverse category in the aquarium industry.
These fish are warm water species. They tend to be colourful, and in a tropical freshwater aquarium, you can keep a variety of species in the same tank, subject to compatibility.
The best set-up for beginners in this category is the “community tank”. This is a mixture of small, colourful species that are relatively hardy.
3. Marine fish
Marine fish are not traditionally associated with beginners, but with advances in filtration and aquarium technology, they are accessible to those with the commitment and budget. Marine aquariums are warm water aquariums and can only consist of fish.
There is a wide variety of very colourful species, or you could opt for a reef aquarium, which has a mix of fish and invertebrates such as fish and corals.
When it comes to choosing pet fish, owners also need to consider who'll care for them when you're away
If you go away on holiday, ask a responsible person to check on the fish and equipment each day.
Remember:
-
Tropical fish will need checking daily.
-
Leave instructions on how to feed and avoid overfeeding.
-
Prepare some meals in advance, which are of the correct ration size.
-
An automatic feeder will release a measured amount of food each day.
This still needs to be checked every day to ensure it’s working correctly.
